Born in Jamaica in 1805 to a Scottish army officer and a local traditional healer, Mary Seacole toured the world caring for the sick and wounded. But she truly found her calling during the Crimean War of the 1850s, when her 'British Hotel' provided care and food to soldiers at the front.
